In these tough times, you have to pinch every penny you can.įor the record- here are the specs for the different editions of Pyware for the people who are not familiar with it and don't know what we're talking about (taken from pyware's website) I'm off topic now, but remember, if you work with a band, be aware of what expenses you can deduct from your taxes in your state, and keep receipts for EVERYTHING even remotely related to the job just in case. It's different in other states- in New York, most schools will hire you as an outside contractor, and pay you 1099/schedule C income (meaning you end up owing the taxes on your pay in april, but get a wide range of opportunities for additional business related deductions). In New Jersey, for instance, anyone who is officially hired to work with a band program has to qualify as a substitute teacher, and actually is a New Jersey registered sub- (meaning you can sneak in a part time gig subbing regular classes too if you need some extra $$$). Your status as an "educator" will vary from state to state. I'm not sure but does Pyware still offer a discount to educators? I forget the exact qualifications- as a staff/creative person on a school's staff, you may be technically a school employee and qualify, or you may be able to get the director to purchase it on your behalf so you can take advantage of his discount. don't be surprised if you encounter some band directors that already have the director's reader- if that's the case, you're ok.Įven if you can't geet $$ help, remeber, purchasing equipment/software for gigs like this is almost always tax deductible, especially if you're purchasing it to do work for a school. It's a little bit of a long shot, but possibly worth asking.

rather than have you print up the drill sheets, dot cards, etc, and ship them to him. Some schools that have decent budgets (ok, so not that many) may be willing to partially fund the "director's" version - talk it out with your director and explain the benefits- with the pyware reader portion, you can send him your drill on CD/DVD rom, a usb stick, or just ftp the files over to him and he can print them and watch the animation etc.
